Experience

Because I have handled complex civil and criminal litigation in Brazos County and across Texas for 28 years! I have personally drafted and filed the kinds of documents the District Clerk is responsible for filing and maintaining. As an elected Justice of the Peace in Brazos County, I have handled civil and criminal cases from a court’s perspective. I am the only candidate in this race who offers you this experience. I know the importance of the District Clerk’s office in our judicial system, and I will continue the great service we have enjoyed for 23 years.

The consequence of failure in maintaining judicial records for the five courts in Brazos County is tremendous for litigants and Brazos County. Convictions and judgments overturned by courts of appeals result in our community suffering the expense and frustration of having to retry the same case. In the 23 years that Marc Hamlin has served as your District Clerk, no case has ever been overturned because of an incomplete or insufficient clerk’s record. I will continue his tradition of prompt, efficient, and effective service to Brazos County.

Jury Selection Process

Your District Clerk’s office is also responsible for the jury selection process in Brazos County. As an attorney, I have selected jurors to make decisions affecting the lives of my clients. As a Judge, I have presided over jury trials. I am the only candidate who offers you this experience. I am intimately familiar with both the grand jury and petit jury selection process. I know the importance of a jury to our judicial system, and I will continue the great service we have enjoyed for 23 years.

Like most Texans, I respect fairness, equality and independence. I can’t stand bullies, and I’ve spent my career fighting for those who couldn’t fight for themselves. I have been blessed to find a profession that is exciting and rewarding. Every day poses a new challenge. I have handled complex civil litigation involving multimillion dollar federal cases to simple justice court cases involving the right to possession of a cat. I have handled criminal cases at both felony and misdemeanor levels. The American judicial system is a great equalizer, a place where everyone has the right to be heard, and a place where – when everyone does their job well – justice has the best chance of being served.

Brazos County Bail Bond Board

Your District Clerk also serves on the Brazos County Bail Bond Board. Civil Cases

As an attorney, I have handled civil cases requiring performance and security bonds. These bonds are frequently required when a court grants a temporary injunction or appoints a receiver. Your District Clerk is responsible for approving the form of bonds and depositing and securing funds paid in compliance with those bonds. I am the only candidate in this race who offers you this experience, and I will continue the great service we have enjoyed for 23 years.

Bank Account Management

Your District Clerk is responsible for management of multiple bank accounts in connection with its various duties. As an elected Judge, I was charged with overseeing an entire department, managing staff, a heavy docket, and funds collected by the Court. At the end of my judicial term, my department was audited — every penny and every paper clip was accounted for. I am the only candidate in this race who offers you this experience, and I will continue the great service we have enjoyed for the last 23 years.
